On opposite sides of the Connecticut River, two settlements were founded in the 1600’s after being purchased from Mattabesett Native Americans. As they grew, the settlements thrived as ports, serving the robust brownstone quarry industry and became important commercial centers well into the 20th Century. Portland was originally named East Middletown or Conway, then Chatham.  It was incorporated as a town in 1841.

Portland brownstone was used in the row houses in Manhattan and Brooklyn, Hartford’s Old State house, Wesleyan University campus buildings, and monuments and gravestones across the state.
