About East Hampton
East Hampton was first settled by travelers from Eastham, Massachusetts who sailed up the Connecticut River to Middle Haddam parish between the two adjacent towns of Middletown and Haddam. Some of these settlers went on to the hills near Lake Pocotopaug, the present-day location of East Hampton. Lake Pocotopaug became the commercial hub of the area and became a center of the manufacturing of bells, with the first factory being constructed in 1808. In the 19th century it became known as a bell mill center. Several factories existed throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries, with production only slowing when the economic downturn of the Great Depression forced several of them to close. The last remaining bell mill was claimed by a fire in 2012. Several of these locations, now renovated, have been repurposed for both residential and commercial purposes.
The naming of East Hampton is an oddity, as it actually lies southwest of Hampton. The town includes several locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Comstock’s Bridge, the Middle Haddam Historic District, and the Rapallo Viaduct. Also noted for its gorgeous fall foliage, autumnal orange reins at East Hampton’s annual pumpkin festivals. Yankee Magazine rates “Pumpkintown, USA” one of seasonal must-sees of the region.
