Nathaniel Foote, who emigrated from Colchester, England, settled this Connecticut town in 1698. Recognizing Colchester’s agricultural potential, Foote established a farm on land purchased from the Sachem of the Mohegan Indians. To this day, Colchester remains a town with a keen memory — its historic downtown serving the community with historic sites as well as a inviting shops and restaurants.
Colchester, Connecticut typically has hot summers with humidity and bitter cold winters. This doesn’t detract from the town’s natural appeal however, as it’s home to the Salmon River State Forest, where visitors can year round enjoy outdoor activities including fishing, hunting, and hiking the scenic trails. In 2010, the National Wildlife Federation even certified Colchester as a Community Wildlife Habitat—the first in the state of Connecticut. It’s been called one of the one the best places to live in America according to a 2013 CNN ranking in the “Least crowded towns” category.
Colchester also boasts New England’s first completely solar-powered winery. The vines at Priam Vineyards seem to thrive in the climate. Their produce become the wines that enliven the town’s dining nightlife and are savored outside the region.
